It's been a tough year for my family. First my last remaining grandfather (my father's father) passed away, then 5 months later my father passed away. 5 months after that, my mom begun what was to be 3 heart surgeries (including a triple bypass). I am so grateful that she pulled through things, & even though she is still in a great deal of pain regularly, she is on the path to healing. This year I wanted to do something very special for her for Christmas.
I had an idea to commission a local glass artist to do a piece similar to the one I walked past every day for 5 weeks while my mom was in her first round of surgery, at Tex-San Heart Hospital. The artist is named Gini Garcia, & her site is here (the piece I was wanting created would have been similar to the heart of page 4 of the gallery). Unfortunately due to poor planning on my part & a solid first line of defense from Ms Garcia's mom, I was never able to speak with her about the piece. I finally gave up after unsuccessfully attempting to reach her for a solid week straight (I called every day). Apparently some artists in San Antonio aren't struggling & do not need my money.
I was a bit bummed because I had searched everywhere I could think of (online & brick & mortar) & couldn't find anything I liked... until...
Not only is it heart related, but this one-of-a-kind piece is actually called "Repaired Heart". It is by an New York based artist/musician named Marcus Poston. Even more appropriately, here's what Marcus had to say about it:"I've been getting into making these hearts lately, as my heart has needed a little healing. This is an unfilled snowglobe made from reclaimed wood, a typewriter key, found copper, an old lightbulb and a key donated by a very nice lady."
